Knowledge Management Basics
Thanks to my Google Alerts, I was led to a brief, but interesting article in Line 56.
Stan Garfield of HP has put together some good starting points for those who want to know more about Knowledge Management. Stan gets off to a good start by recommending "Working Knowledge: How Organizations Manage what They Know" by Thomas H. Davenport and Larry Pursak. This was the first KM book that I read, about 8 years ago, and it is the primer in my book.
Also included in the article is a link to some old (1998) postings by Chris Riemer on KM, but they seem valid. The topics covered by Riemer are: KM and the business, Where we stand, Where do we go?, and The seeds of the crystal.
The final section of the article discusses push communications, such as newsletters, and the 10 principles to apply when working on this type of knowledge sharing.
Stephen Covey in "The Eighth Habit" makes perhaps the best business case for knowledge management. I highly recommend that book, particuarly the first chapter.
